How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram – Guide

When someone unfollows you on Instagram it is likely because they don’t want to see your posts on their feed anymore and/or don’t want to see any of your stories.

There are a whole host of reasons why somebody may feel this way, but it may leave you feeling confused if you don’t know why you’ve been unfollowed by a certain account.

In this article, we are going to be looking at whether Instagram is any different in this regard, while also looking at ways in which you can manually check your follower count. Let’s get started.

How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram – is it possible?

Due to privacy and security reasons, Instagram understandably doesn’t notify users when someone unfollows them.

Given how toxic that platform can be, where likes and followers are considered the be-all and end-all, it isn’t unreasonable to think that a user could receive abuse via their DMs if they were known to have unfollowed someone.

Across other popular social media platforms, users aren’t notified when somebody unfollows them or ‘unfriends’ in the case of Facebook. This can make it very difficult to know who has unfollowed you.

Having said that, discovering who has unfollowed you on Instagram isn’t an impossible task just because Instagram won’t notify you about it.

In order to find out who has unfollowed you on the platform, you will need to conduct a little bit of investigative work. There are couple of methods in which you can employ, as seen below:

Check your followers list

If you have a good grasp on who follows you on Instagram and want to take a blanket approach to see whether any of them have unfollowed you, then checking your followers list is the best way to go.

Once you’re on your followers list, you will either be able to search for specific users (to see if they are still showing up on your list), or simply scroll through, keeping an eye out for any missing names that used to be there.

To employ this method on the Instagram app, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Instagram account.
  2. Navigate to your profile by selecting your account icon on the bottom right hand side of the screen.
  3. Select the ‘followers’ button.
  4. Either scroll through your list of followers or use the search bar to search for specific names.

To employ this method on Instagram for web, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Instagram account.
  2. Navigate to your profile by selecting your account icon on the top right hand side of the screen and then selecting ‘profile’ from the drop down menu.
  3. Select the ‘followers’ button.
  4. You aren’t able to search for specific users within your followers list on web, so you will have to just scroll through the list instead.

Search for a user and check their following list

If you suspect that a specific user has unfollowed you then the best way to check is it visit their profile and check their following list. There is a new limit to how many people you can follow too.

Once on their list, you will need to discover whether your name is still showing on their or not. To do this on the mobile app, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Instagram account.
  2. Tap the magnifying glass on the bottom menu bar to bring up a search bar.
  3. Tap on the search bar and find the account you wish to check.
  4. Once on their profile, select the ‘following’ button.
  5. Scroll through this list and see if you come across your account. Alternatively, use the search bar within the following list to search for your account. If you don’t appear then it means that you have been unfollowed.

To employ this method on a web browser, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Instagram account.
  2. Use the search bar at the top of the screen to search for the account you wish to check.
  3. Once on their profile, select the ‘following’ button.
  4. There is no search option within the following list on the web version of Instagram so scroll through the list and look out for you name.

Use a third party app

The final way to check who has unfollowed you is to use a third party app.

The best one, in our opinion, is FollowMeter which allows you to keep tabs on who has unfollowed you, as well as any accounts which don’t follow you back.

The app is incredibly easy to use, just requiring you to sync your Instagram account to it when you first download it.

After that, you’ll be good to go and will be able to keep up to date at all times on who has got rid of you from their Instagram.

Conclusion

To conclude, Instagram isn’t going to notify you when someone has unfollowed you so if you’re interested in finding out whether someone has then your best bet is to either check your ‘followers’ list or another user’s ‘following’ list.

There are third party apps you can use to see who unfollowed you on Insta, but you need to make sure they’re set up beforehand. We hope that our instructions above will help help you to do exactly that.
