Sky Sports app not working – What to do

The Sky Sports app is a free app which can be downloaded by anyone who owns a smart phone.

It is hugely popular and therefore generates a lot of traffic. This is perhaps why the app sometimes struggles and temporarily stops working.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at the main causes of the Sky Sports app not working and explain in simple terms the quickest ways to get it back up and running.

Sky Sports app not working – The quick fix

The most likely reason for the Sky Sports app to stop working is a loading issue which results in the app to freeze when you first open the app up. The best way to override this is to close the app down and to start it up again.

This can either be done by force closing the app entirely, uninstalling the app or even going as far as restarting your device.

None of these tasks take long or require you to be a tech wizard but we’ll go through them all step-by-step for iOS users below:

Force close

Navigate to your phone’s home screen and swipe up from the bottom of your display.

This will bring up a catalogue of all your open apps (prepare to be surprised at how many apps you have running in the background).

Swipe until you find the Sky Sports app and swipe up on it to close it down. Now find the Sky Sports icon on your home screen and fire it back up.

Delete/re-install

Find the Sky Sports app on your home screen and hold down on the app’s icon. This will bring up a drop down menu which will provide you with a number of options.

Hit ‘remove app’, then afterwards go to the app store and re-install it. This actually works for other Sky apps too, and it’s the best thing to do if your Sky Go app won’t open.

Restart phone

Hold down the power button on the right hand side of your iPhone, whilst also holding down one of the volume buttons – this will bring up a screen that allows you swipe to turn your phone off.

Press these same buttons again after 30 seconds to turn it back on and to fire the Sky Sports app back up.

Unfortunately, there are other issues that cause the Sky Sports app to fail, and the reasons can be very similar to other apps. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Check your connection

The Sky Sports app is one that that requires an internet connection to work. So if you aren’t connected to the internet then that could be the reason why the app isn’t working.

To establish a solid internet connection you need to either be connected via Wi-Fi or mobile data.

To establish a Wi-Fi connection head to the settings app on your iOS device and select the ‘Wi-Fi’ option which can usually be found underneath ‘Airplane Mode’.

Once on the Wi-Fi tab, make sure the bar is slid over to the right so it is showing as green and then select one of your available networks and connect.

To establish a connection via mobile data then head back to the settings app again but this time scroll down a little further and select ‘Mobile Data’.

Same again, make sure the bar is slid over to the right so it’s showing as green and then your phone will do the rest to secure a 3G, 4G or 5G connection.

Check your subscription

This one is only one to consider if you are trying to stream live sport via the Sky Sports app. If you don’t have an active subscription to Sky Sports then you will not be able to use this feature of this app.

To check if your subscription is still active then visit this section of the Sky TV website where you are able to manage your subscription.

If you don’t have a subscription, then you can sign up to a new one to give you access once more to the live tv section of the Sky Sports app. Or, you can look at moving to a monthly package with Now TV instead if you want to watch Sky Sports without the long term deal attached.

Conclusion

The app has two main uses – firstly, it’s a place where anyone can keep up to date with all the latest news from the world of sport and secondly, it’s a place where those with a Sky Sports subscription can watch live sport on the go.

To conclude, there are clearly a number of reasons why the Sky Sports app may be having some troubles, but the good thing is that the issue can often be resolved in a swift manner.

If the problem persists after trying all of our suggestions then it may be worth getting in touch with Sky Sports directly to see what they suggest.

Their live chat function is usually a good place to start where one of their technical support team will be on hand to assist you. If you have enjoyed this article then feel free to check out some of our others for more troubleshooting tips across a range of different smart phone apps.
