IHG App not working? Here’s the solution

IHG is a “InterContinental Hotels Group” that runs various different hotels, with the Holiday Inn being their most well known. The app for IHG is essentially a miniature version of their website, it lets your browse availability in their various hotels and just generally makes the process a lot simpler. So, what do you do when the app stops working? Here’s what to do.

IHG App not working? The fix

Whenever an app like this isn’t working it’s always frustrating, however that doesn’t mean there’s nothing we can do about it. In fact, the most common cause of these issues is going to be connection issues. Either your device, your network (router or wifi) or the connection to IHG’s servers themselves. This is usually an issue on our side so something we can fix but it can be a problem on IHG’s side.

Thankfully IHG is active on Twitter and reports any downtime there so it’s quick and easy to check by quickly opening their Twitter page. I’ll include a link to that below. You can also consider using the best hotel booking app to book your stay, as you can often book on of the IHG hotels through them anyway.

If you’ve checked that IHG aren’t having issues and you’re still having problems, then there’s a few things we can do about it. Let’s have a look…

Connection issues

Most of the time, your internet connection will be the issue when connecting to the IHG app – not the app itself. And in many cases, we can narrow this down to one of two things, which are;

  • Airplane mode – When you board a flight, you need to either turn your phone off, or enable airplane mode. This will stop your data connection, meaning that the IHG app won’t work. So, double check you’re not in airplane mode.
  • Wi-Fi router – If you’re definitely not in Wi-Fi mode, then you might be having an issue with your home internet. 9 times out of 10, your home Wi-Fi can be fixed by simply resetting the router in your home.

Check for updates

When it comes down to the app itself, the issue can be caused either from their side – e.g. their server – or your side e.g. an issue with your device. Unfortunately, if it’s a server issue then there’s not much you can do to fix the issue. If it’s on your end, then the first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your phone is updated – for both iPhone and Android devices.

iPhone:

  • Head into the app store.
  • Go to your profile.
  • You’ll find a list of apps – scroll down to IHG and click the update button next to it.

Android:

  • Go to the Play Store home screen.
  • Then, click “My apps & games.”
  • You can update the IHG app here, or sometimes a better idea is to update all instead to make sure everything is up to date.

Reinstall/clear cache

When you use an app, the data that you use is slowly stored by the app for future use – it helps it to remember you, and when you revisit the app at a later date, it’ll remember you and make your experience a little quicker – we call this caching.

Unfortunately, sometimes this can lead to corrupted data being stored on the phone. This can, in turn, make the phone load much more slowly than you’d probably like. So, the best thing to do here is to simply clear your cache.

For iPhones, the quickest way to do this is to simply uninstall the IHG app and then re-install it again. This will automatically clear all of the saved data that the app has downloaded, which can can help you to get the app working again.

If you’re an Android user, you can do this manually without having to delete the app;

  • Go to settings.
  • Select apps.
  • Head into the IHG app.
  • Click storage.
  • Find the clear cache button at the bottom of your screen.

Conclusion

In conclusion the IHG app is rarely down so the issues are likely on your end. It is always worth checking though which you can do with the link to their Twitter we linked above. If there are no issues though then it could be on your end, which an update and clear cache should do the trick in most circumstances.
