Knowing the weather is an important part of your day, or your week if you are planning a day trip. Turning up in a shirt and shorts when you should have brought a raincoat is never a pleasant experience, but if the BBC Weather app has you covered… if it’s properly updating.
Though it’s often the BBC news app not working, the weather app can have its issues too. Luckily for you, we can guide you through the steps you need to get your BBC Weather app working as it should, so it might seem gloomy now, but clear skies are ahead!
BBC Weather App not updating? – Try this
When something isn’t working or updating as it should, it can be very frustrating. It can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause and fix it.
However, there are a few really quick things you can try, before you have to get into anything too complicated, and most of the time, these will fix your problem.
The first is making sure you aren’t in airplane mode. This can sometimes happen by accidentally pressing it as you pick up your phone. It’s easily done, and it’s well worth checking, just in case.
If that’s not the issue, then you can really quickly try the time old method of turning it off and on again. It’s surprising how often this works, and without going too deep into it, there’s a lot of small things this does that can potentially fix your connectivity problems.
If neither of these solutions work, then don’t worry. Just follow the step-by-step guide below, and no matter what the problem is, we’ll have your app updating properly again in under 5 minutes.
Check your location settings
The BBC Weather app won’t update if it doesn’t know your location. When you see the below image, make sure you switch on your “location” setting on your device, or tap “ok” to enable it.
Sometimes everything is set up right, but your BBC weather app won’t update. Check the top left of your app and you should see “updated a moment ago.” If this says anything different, then you have a problem with your internet, or their servers.
Check the BBC Weather server status
I know it might not seem like it, but very rarely something exceptional can happen, such as floods or a storm, and the BBC Weather app won’t update, either due to the weather itself, or by a surge in demand. Sometimes though, they just have scheduled maintenance.
Regardless of what it is, you can check their server status here, and if there are no reports of outages, then you have narrowed down the issue as it’s something to do with your connection, or your device.
Checking your Wi-Fi
If their servers are fine, then there’s a good chance the problem is with your Wi-Fi connection. Don’t worry, it’s not too hard to fix.
Sometimes it’s just a matter of having a bad signal. Try getting closer to your router and making sure you have line of sight with it. Thick walls and being too far away can sometimes cause Wi-Fi to lose signal and unfortunately, your connection.
Resetting your router
Resetting your router is a good thing to do every now and then, as a router is the lifeline of your internet connection and over time it can build up errors, bad connections, or even become the target of Wi-Fi jackers.
Doing a hard reset requires you to take out the phone line and power cable connected to it, then waiting 30 seconds.
In this time, your router will refresh itself and likely change your DNS and IP. Wait for it to reconnect once you plug it back in, and if it didn’t help, then you may need to call your ISP about the stability of your connection and use your mobile data until it’s fixed.
If you can get on to the internet, but the BBC Sport app still isn’t working, then there are a few more steps we can take.
Clear the cache and data
Thankfully BBC Weather doesn’t require any login details, so clearing the cache and data iOS pretty straightforward. This will clear all of the saved data in the app, which could be stopping it from running properly.
Just go to Settings > Apps > BBC Weather > Storage > Clear data/Clear cache.
Sometimes apps can get really sluggish or even stop working when overloaded with old data, so doing a bit of spring cleaning evey now and then can help a lot.
Re-install the BBC Weather app
If everything else has failed, your best option is to start from scratch and fully reinstall the app. On IOS, touch and hold the app until it jiggles, then tap the app again, and select delete. Then reinstall.
On Android, you can Long-press the app icon > Tap “uninstall” on the popup menu > Re-install on the Play store. This is a step further than just clearing the cache, and it should work if there’s corrupted files stopping the app from running.
Finally, you can update
And now for the moment you’ve been waiting for. One of these steps should have allowed BBC Weather to connect to the server and it should update on its own once you open it up.
Conclusion
Keeping your apps updated is essential to have them continue to be useful to you. An outdated weather app is about as useful as a scarf in a heatwave!
BBC Weather not updating properly could certainly ruin your day, but this guide is here for you on the rainy day you may need it, just like your favourite umbrella.
