Apple TV Remote is a convenient app for controlling your Apple TV (or other compatible devices) using your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

However, there can be times where your Apple TV Remote doesn’t work properly. Here are some common issues that can cause the app to fail, and ways you can fix them.

Apple Remote app not working? – What to do

There are various reasons that could be preventing Apple TV Remote from working as it should be.

There are some common causes that you’ll come across more frequently than others.

If you want to get your Apple TV Remote working again, then run through the below; then, you can return to controlling your devices from the comfort of your app

1: Check for Connection Issues

Apple TV Remote may not be working because your devices aren’t all connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

This is a requirement for the app to work, and it’s one of the main reasons why you may find your Apple remote not working.

Ensure that all relevant devices are connected to the same network, which includes your Apple TV Remote and the device you’re using it with.

For iPhone

Go to Settings > Wi-Fi. Check that it’s connected to the right network – you want to make sure your iPhone and Apple TV are connected to the same Wifi network to prevent issues.

For Apple TV

Go to Settings > General>Network > Wi-Fi. Check that it’s connected to the right network.

For Mac

Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the top-left of the screen to check if it’s connected to the right network.

2: Restart your Wi-Fi Router

If Apple Remote is still not working, try restarting your router by turning it off and on again. Then, try using Apple Remote once more.

Routers can have issues functioning if too many devices connect to it at once.

By restarting your router, you’ll be able to ensure that some devices will be disconnected – then, your Apple TV Remote can take priority.

3: Remember to Enable Home Sharing

Apple Remote requires all related devices to have Home Sharing enabled to work properly.

Check that Home Sharing is set up and turned on for all relevant devices.

For iPhone:

Open your Apple Remote app. If Home Sharing is not set up, it should showcase an option called ‘Use Home Sharing’.

Press on it to initiate the set up process, and sign in with your Apple ID.

If Home Sharing is already set up, go to Settings and look at the Home Sharing option.

If the switch next to it is green, Home Sharing is enabled. If it’s not, then press it to enable Home Sharing.

For Apple TV:

Go toΒ Settings > Users and Accounts > Home Sharing. Then, enable Home Sharing, and sign in with your Apple ID.

For Mac:

Go to Menu > System Preferences > Sharing > Media Sharing. This should show an option for Home Sharing.

If the box next to it is not checked, Home Sharing is turned off. Click on the box to turn Home Sharing on.

4: Restart your Devices

There’s a chance that the issue is not with your Apple TV remote app – instead, it may be with the devices that you’re using it on.

This can vary depending on what iOS device you use it with, but most typically, you’ll find this issue on iPhone.

For iPhone:

All you need to do on an iPhone is turn it off – you can do this by simply holding down the power button on the side of the phone.

Then, when the slider appears at the top, swipe it to the right.

Then, you can turn the phone back on in the same way, by holding down the power button again. This could resolve the issue.

For Apple TV:

Go to Settings > System > Restart.

For Mac:

Go to Menu > Restart.

5: Update your Devices

There’s a chance that your Apple TV Remote is not working because of outdated drivers on your phone.

Check for any available software updates for your devices and download them. Then, try using Apple Remote again.

For iPhone:

First click into Settings > General > Software Update. There should be a Download and install button available if there’s an update ready for you to launch.

Updating your iPhone can get Apple TV app working again,

For Apple TV:

Go to Settings > System > Software Updates. Click on ‘update software’ to check if there are any available updates.Β

If there is one, download it to update your Apple TV.

For Mac:

Go to Menu > System Preferences > Software Update. If there’s an available update, it should show either an ‘update now’ or ‘upgrade now’ option.

Click on them to update your Mac.

6: Make sure to Update the App

There’s also a chance that your Apple TV remote isn’t working because it hasn’t been updated in a while.

The longer you leave it without an update, the more likely it is to have issues.

You can see all of the apps you’ve downloaded within your account by going into Settings.

Scroll down to the app to see whether you’ve got an update available and ready to install.

7: Close and then Reopen App

There could be an issue with the app itself, so try closing and reopening it.

Double-press the home button to show your tabs, and swipe up on the Apple Remote tab to close it.

Then, open Apple Remote again.

8: Finally, delete then Re-install the App

If you’ve tried everything else, then for iPhone devices the best thing to do is uninstall and reinstall the app.

What this does it completely clear the app’s cache and saved data, which can become corrupted and cause issues.

After you’ve done this, try using the Apple TV Remote again.

First, hold down the Apple Remote app icon on your home screen.

When you hold it down, the option should pop up showing you that you can remove the app completely.

The delete app option should come up giving you the option to remove the app.

You can select Delete, which will go ahead and process the uninstallation.

After you’ve done this, you’re going to want to reinstall the Apple TV Remote app again on your device.

You can do this by looking in your Purchased section in the settings of your iPhone.
