Triller and TikTok are both video-creating platforms, where users can shoot and edit short videos.
You can use music from the app to accompany your videos, as well as other editing features, and upload them for others to see. You can also browse through other videos, and follow your favourite creators.
And though they are similar to each other, there are some notable differences between the two which we’ll check out too.
Triller vs TikTok
Whilst Triller is a music video app at heart, TikTok is more of a short form video app.
Both of the apps give you the opportunity to upload video clips, though Triller has stronger ties to hip hop and the music industry – TikTok is a much larger social media platform.
TikTok is known for being one of the largest Chinese social media apps, whereas Triller is American.
But it’s easy to see why people get the two confused – they’re both video sharing platforms that are popular with influencer marketing, and they’re both reliant on trending hashtags to find the right video for you.
A big factor to consider when deciding between the two is the amount of active users they have – most recently in 2021, Triller claimed to have 65 million active users. TikTok has more than 10 times this amount at over 800 million active users.
As well as this, there are quite a few differences between Triller and TikTok despite their similarities. We’ll compare the two in this article, and explore both their differences and similarities.
Popularity
The most glaring difference between the two platforms is their popularity. Most people have heard of TikTok as its trends reach users of other platforms, e.g. YouTube.
There are many TikTok compilations on YouTube, which garner a large amount of views. This exposes YouTube’s userbase to TikTok’s content, causing even non-TikTok users to be aware of its existence.
As a result, TikTok’s user base is significantly larger than Triller’s, meaning TikTok has more support and funds to use for improving/maintaining the app.
Though they are both apps for short form videos, there are a couple of things that separate the two.
Testing Out The App
Triller allows you to use the app without logging in, or creating an account. This is good for new users, who may be unsure about the app.
They may wish to try out the app first, before committing to creating an account for it.
Triller doesn’t just allow non-account users to access a few features. It gives them access to almost all their features, including the video-creation and post-processing features.
Tiktok does not offer such an opportunity, as it requires you to either log in or sign up before it lets you use the app.
However, when creating an account, it does ask you to choose your interests so that they can tailor the recommendations to you. This makes it easier to find content that you’ll like.
Triller doesn’t offer such a thing, even when you create an account. There is no prompt for choosing your interests like TikTok does.
This means that the content you get shown is not tailored towards you initially. It can be harder to find content you’ll like, which can discourage new users.
User interface
Both apps have similar UI. They have a video-browsing section, a music-discovery section, and a video-editing section.
There’s also a lot of the same features, such as the ability to like, comment and share videos. Both also have the option to view the tracks used in videos, and show other videos that feature the same music.
However, Triller’s UI is a bit more cluttered than TikTok’s, which makes the viewing experience more disruptive. Triller’s UI has a link to their merch page always visible, with no clear way of closing it.
The app also has a row of popular emojis near the bottom, which can be quite distracting. There’s no clear way of collapsing them in any way either, which is especially troubling if you have no use for them.
TikTok, on the other hand, has a much neater interface. There is no stream of emojis, nor a non-closable merch link covering the UI.
They do have a link to their special offers visible, but it has an ‘x’ mark showing to let you know that it can be closed. This all makes for a nicer viewing experience.
Alternatively, Triller does offer various different methods of viewing or experiencing their videos, which can make up for their cluttered UI.
They have a ‘maximise video’ function, which maximises a video to full-screen. This means that viewers can watch videos without any distractions.
However, you don’t have access to any of the other features when in full-screen mode, including the scroll feature. This means that you have to exit full-screen mode to move onto another video.
Additionally, Triller has a ‘minimise video’ function, so that you can watch a video minimised whilst still using the app. This feature lets you multi-task in the app. TikTok does not have either of these functions.
Triller also lets you listen to a video’s music track without the visuals, when you press the ‘view track’ option on a video. This gives you easy access to specific songs.
TikTok does not have this feature, but it does have a music section. Users can find and play all the songs on the app there.
Triller also has these features, but its range of songs is much smaller than TikTok’s. There are only four tabs to explore.
TikTok’s music section includes various playlists and categories to explore, as well as a much larger selection of music. This offers users more freedom regarding music choice for their videos.
However, Triller does allows users to link the app to their Apple Music account, so that they have access to their Apple Music songs. There is also the option to link to their local music files.
This gives users the freedom to choose music they personally like, in addition to the songs from the app’s collection.
Linking Accounts
Triller allows users to link their account to various other social media accounts, including Instagram and Snapchat.
It also lets users link to their SoundCloud account, which gives users the option to share their tracks there.
However, TikTok does not seem to have any clear options for linking other accounts to your TikTok account.
There are only options for linking to other social media platforms when prompted to sign in at the start.
Customisation Options
Both platforms offer a variety of customisation features for both the videos and the music. However, there are quite a few differences between the platforms in this regard.
Editing Music
Triller has a feature for editing and remixing existing tracks. This allows for more creative freedom regarding the music.
TikTok does not have this feature. Its music-editing features are quite limited. You can control the music’s volume, and which section of the song is used in videos.
The latter feature only lets you drag the music waves, and doesn’t give you clear indications as to its duration or end point.
Triller also lets you choose a specific section of the song to use, but through trimming the music. Its UI is much simpler to understand and control.
It showcases the length, the starting point, and the end point, of the song’s section in clarity.
Creating & Editing Videos
Triller has various text customisation options and a series of filters.
However, TikTok has a much larger selection of filters, text customisation options, effects, and more. This includes stickers, emojis, GIFs, and other things, that you can add to your videos.
This allows for a great amount of freedom when in post-production.
Furthermore, TikTok offers features that can help users tailor their videos to a greater range of audiences.
For example, they have a caption feature, where the words spoken in your videos get converted into captions. This allows those hard of hearing to enjoy your videos also.
Functionality
TikTok is more flexible in usage than Triller, as it offers a series of features for businesses that use the app.
It lets you convert your account into a professional account, look at analytics, and more. This makes treating TikTok as a business endeavour much easier and convenient for users.
TikTok also letβs you have multiple accounts on the app, unlike Triller. People who use TikTok for both personal and business reasons can easily manage and switch between accounts.
You can’t see who viewed a TikTok video that you’ve made, but this is the same for Triller too – both apps value privacy.
Conclusion
In conclusion, both platforms have their pros and cons. Depending on what purpose you wish to use the app for, either one could be more suitable.
If you wish to start a business or make profit, TikTok is the better option. It has a bigger fanbase, and it has tools for aiding those endeavours – it also allows you to accept TikTok gifts worth real money from your viewers.
It’s also the better choice for video editing, as its video editing capabilities are solid and the app is
However, if you wish to focus on editing music, or you want more freedom over your choice of song – Triller is the more suitable candidate. It has more features for editing music, and allows you to link your account to other music platforms.
Overall, each app has its specialties. Consider what your main purpose is for using such platforms, and use that to determine which app is better for you.
