Xbox App won’t open or not working? Do this

The Xbox app is a type of companion app to the console that allows Live members to access different features as well as providing an extra screen with certain games, apps and other content for the Xbox.

Microsoft has an app for Windows 10 operating system users which allows gamers to play games from their Windows Store with other players.

However, many users have found issues with opening the app, particularly on Windows 10. The easiest solution to try and fix the issue of the Windows 10 Xbox app failing to open is to restart your computer.

If this doesn’t work for you then here we address this issue and give you some ideas on how to fix it if this has become a prevalent problem for you.

Xbox App won’t open? Update first

The first fix is always the easiest, and it is what I say in almost every ‘how to fix’ article, update your systems. You should update your operating system, as outdated software will often cause issues.

This is because new software not being installed causes compatibility issues when it is out of date with apps. In Windows 10, go through the following process to update your operating system:

  1. Press the ‘Windows’ key plus ‘I’ on your keyboard.
  2. This will open the ‘Settings’ app.
  3. Go to ‘Update and Security.’
  4. Click the button that says ‘Check for Updates.’
  5. Click any updates available.
  6. Restart your computer.
  7. Try to boot the Xbox app again to see if this has fixed your issue.

This trick can usually work if the Steam app won’t open too, but there are a couple of other things that you can also try if you want to.

Clear your cache files

The next thing you can do if updating hasn’t solved your issues is to clear your cache files.

Cache files aren’t necessary to keep and it is good to clear them when you are experiencing app issues because the problem could be coming from a corrupt file, located within the cache.

So to clear your cache files on Windows 10 follow this guide:

  1. Press ‘Windows Key’ + ‘R’
  2. This will bring up the ‘Run’ window.
  3. Type in the box the following > wsreset.exe
  4. Press the ‘Enter Key’ to submit this text command.
  5. Restart the ‘Microsoft Store’ to see if your issue is now fixed.

This will clear your Microsoft Store cache as well. In many cases, fixing Microsoft Store should resolve the issue. If not, you’ll want to check the Xbox app itself.

Reset the Xbox App

Our next solution to fix the issue of the Xbox App not loading is to reset the Xbox App Package.

A simple fix that can be a little daunting for inexperienced users, but never fear, this is what we do. So follow the process given below:

  1. Go to the ‘Search Bar’
  2. Type in ‘PowerShell’ to the search bar.
  3. Click ‘PowerShell’ in the options given.
  4. When the PowerShell boots type in the following command (given in bold below) manually to avoid errors with copying and pasting.
  5. Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $($_.InstallLocation) \Axml”}
  6. You will have to wait a little while for this process to complete.
  7. After this process has finished, reload the Xbox app to see if the problem is now fixed.

How do I reinstall the Xbox App?

When Windows 10 apps aren’t loading properly or at all and you have already tried resetting the Xbox package to counteract the problem you can try reinstalling.

This gets a little more technical than the above solutions so follow the process carefully that is laid out below, and type in the commands manually rather than copying and pasting from here.

  1. Go to the ‘Search Bar’
  2. Type in ‘PowerShell’ to the search bar.
  3. Click ‘PowerShell’ in the list you are given.
  4. Select ‘Run as Administrator.’
  5. When the PowerShell boots type in the following command (given in bold below) manually.
  6. a. Get-AppxPackage -name “Microsoft.XboxApp” | Remove-AppxPackage
  7. Once you have entered that command and the process completes continue the next step
  8. Go to ‘Microsoft Store’
  9. Reinstall the Xbox App
  10. Try opening the Xbox App now and hopefully your problem is fixed.

How do I change my regional settings?

Sometimes the issue might be coming from a communication mix up from incorrect settings, so it is best to check this. This is the cause of many PC problems. You can change this in the Region settings of your device.

If you are still having problems with the Xbox app not opening try the following fix:

  1. Go to the ‘Start menu.’
  2. Go to ‘Settings.’
  3. Go to ‘Time and Language.’
  4. Select ‘Region and Language.’
  5. Change your country or region in the drop-down box for example; United Kingdom.
  6. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
  7. Reload the Xbox App in order to see if your issue is now fixed.

Conclusion

If your Xbox App won’t open as shown above there are a few quick fixes you can try to combat the issue.

Unfortunately, there will always be issues that may interfere with your applications working properly, but lucky for you we usually have some easy solutions for you to try so don’t give up.

Hopefully, now you are back on your way to playing your favourite games online using your Windows 10 Xbox app. Happy gaming!
