Learning a language requires a lot of time and effort. So it’s really frustrating when you can’t get on to practise because of your Rosetta Stone app not working.
Founded back in 1992, Rosetta Stone is arguably the most well-known language-learning apps out there and it is the choice of many. We’re going to run through some troubleshooting tips you can try when the Rosetta Stone app isn’t working – that way, you can start learning your favourite language as soon as possible.
Rosetta Stone App Not Working – Here’s how to fix it
If you’re finding that Rosetta Stone won’t open, the first thing you’re going to want to do is check their server status. If this is fine, then you’ll want to update your app, make sure you’ve cleared the cache and ensure you’re securely connected to your home Wi-Fi or mobile data.
In rare cases, you may want to delete the Rosetta Stone app and then re-install it to make a fix. But before you do that, follow these quick troubleshooting steps first.
See if there’s issues with Rosetta Stone’s server
Rosetta Stone is a large company and is very popular with language learners, so it’s not often that there are issues with Rosetta Stone’s servers, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen.
If you do think that there’s a bigger issue, they’ll typically make a post about this on their Twitter page. They are often on there giving updates and responding to users, so it’s a good idea for you to go on this first and then wait to use the app, at least until the issue is resolved.
Though sometimes, even if you’ve already checked their Twitter page and there’s no mention of an issue on their end, it could just be an issue with your device. There are some common problems that many folks seem to come across with their Rosetta Stone app, and if yours is still not working, then there are a few reasons why.
Check for updates
The first thing to try when the Rosetta Stone app isn’t working is to make sure that you’re running on the latest update. An app is much more likely to have problems when running on an out-of-date version.
If you have an iPhone, check for updates by visiting the App Store > tap your profile icon at the top of the screen and scroll to see pending updates. Tap ‘Update’ on the Rosetta Stone app if that is showing as needing to be updated.
If you’re using an Android, open the Google Play Store app > tap the profile icon and the top right > tap Manage Apps & Devices, apps with an update available are labelled ‘Update Available’.
If you’re using an iPhone, we recommend you allow automatic downloads to ensure that all of your apps are always up-to-date. You can do this by going to your Settings > App Store and ticking ‘App Updates’ to on.
Next, it’s also a good idea to make that your phone itself is running on the latest update, as this can also cause apps to play up. You can check this by going to your phone’s Settings.
Check that you’re connected to WiFi or mobile data
The next thing to check is that you’re connected to WiFi or mobile data. Most apps don’t work offline, so a common reason that you won’t be able to use them is that you’re not connected to the internet.
If you’re seeing a message about internet connection as shown below, this is likely to be the reason you’re not able to use the app.
A common mistake people make is turning off their mobile data. To make sure that hasn’t happened go to Settings > Mobile Data and make sure that this is ticked as on.
To check the WiFi on an iPhone, swipe up and make sure the WiFi is turned on (it will be highlighted blue), alternatively, go to your phone’s Settings > WiFi, and make sure this is turned on. Then check for any WiFi you can connect to. You can follow the same steps for Android but swipe down instead of up.
Clear app data and cache
If everything appears to be okay with the severs and you’re all up-to-date, the next thing we recommend you try is to clear the app data and cache. You can clear an app’s cache and data on Android, but on iPhone, you need to delete and re-install the app.
Luckily, there’s an “Offload” function, which means that your Rosetta Stone data gets kept on the phone when you delete the app, so it restores it all when you re-install Rosetta Stone.
To “offload” Rosetta Stone from your iPhone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and scroll down until you find the Rosetta Stone app, tap it, then tap “Offload App.” Go to the App Store, find Rosetta Stone and install it again.
For Android, go to Settings > Apps and Notifications > See all apps > Rosetta Stone > Storage and cache > clear cache. You’ll then need to repeat these steps but tap ‘Clear Storage instead.
Delete and re-install the Rosetta Stone app
The next thing we recommend you try is uninstalling the Rosetta Stone app, then re-install it.
To delete the app, tap and hold down on the app until the below drop-down appears. Then hit ‘Delete App’. For Android, tap and hold down the app until you feel a vibration, then drag the app to where it says ‘Uninstall’.
It’s easy to re-install by searching for it in the App Store or Google Play Store.
Rosetta Stone is one of the best apps for learning languages, and it’s similar to other alternatives like Busuu or Mondly. It can be a real inconvenience when your Rosetta Stone app isn’t working, but generally, there’s an easy fix, and it’s likely to be one issue that we’ve covered in this article.
