Navigating the UK’s Healthcare Apps: Which Ones Do You Really Need?

The importance of healthcare apps became evident in 2020 during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Suddenly, advice, guidance and rules were presented to us through our mobile phones, and in the UK, the NHS app was a way of reporting positive tests and proving you had been vaccinated.

The NHS app is just one of many healthcare apps that UK residents should have downloaded on their phones. Below, we will run through the healthcare that you NEED to have and explain how they will help you to enjoy a healthier and happier lifestyle.

UK’s Healthcare Apps: The top six

NHS app

As already mentioned, the NHS app was thrust into the spotlight during the Covid-19 pandemic but it does far more than just provide users with their vaccine passport. The NHS app is something that all UK residents should have as it is basically a place where you can keep track of all your healthcare activity from prescriptions to test results.

Through the NHS app, you can make simple but effective changes that will improve your life, including changing your prescription pickup location and booking vaccinations. All you have to do is log in with your email address and NHS number and you will be good to go.

MyGp

MyGp performs a similar function to the NHS app except it is more specific to your GP practice. Through MyGp, you can book GP appointments without having to sit on an endless hold loop over the phone and even chat to medical professionals directly if your issue doesn’t require a face-to-face appointment.

The MyGp app also provides users with their complete medical history, so you can take a look at all of your past ailments and prescriptions. Repeat prescriptions can also be ordered and managed through the MyGp app, while it is also a platform where you can keep track of your blood pressure and heart rate.

Health Unlocked

Health Unlocked is a fantastic app for people who want to discuss their health with other likeminded individuals. If you have recently been diagnosed with something and want to talk to people who have been through or are going through the same thing, then the chances are you will find these people on Health Unlocked.

On top of putting you in touch with other patients, the app provides users with fantastic resources relating to over 300 conditions. Meanwhile, industry experts are also on hand via the app to answer questions and offer support to those who most need it.

Sleepio

As the name suggests, Sleepio is an app all about sleep. It is often underappreciated how important a good nights sleep is for your health and wellbeing and if you are someone who struggles getting that, then Sleepio could be the answer to your prayers.

The app features a six-week programme where users take part in 20-minute sessions alongside their virtual sleep expert, all of which are designed to promote healthy sleeping patterns. The programme is catered to each individual’s needs regardless of whether the issue relates to falling asleep or disrupted sleep.

MyFitnessPal

MyFitnessPal is arguably the number one fitness app in the UK, especially if you are serious about going on a diet and shedding a few pounds. The app allows users to track their calories in a way that is unrivalled in the market today. Simply take a picture of whatever you’re planning on eating/drinking and the app will tell you how many calories you’ve consumed.

If you are committed to doing this long-term, then the app will calculate how much weight you are set to lose based on what you’ve eaten and how much you weigh. Keep the app informed on your fitness activity and the results will be even more accurate as a calorie deficit will be calculated.

FitOn

FitOn is a fantastic app to download, particularly alongside MyFitnessPal. The app provides users with hundreds of workouts that can be completed at home, all of which are free to view. The app has something for everyone with workouts covering a wide range of activities from high intensity training to yoga.

The app prides itself on providing workouts that don’t require any commitment so there really is no excuse not to get involved if you are looking to improve your fitness. You might even save money on a gym membership by downloading FitOn, too.
