How to quote someone in Discord – Quick Guide

Discord is a messaging service that offers a lot of features in addition to their messaging and calling features, such as the ability to screen-share, reply to certain messages and you can highlight text in Discord too.

As well as this, you can also quote others in the app too.

Quoting someone in Discord simply means formatting a message in order to highlight or accentuate the text as a quote.

You can do this through a series of methods, some of which we’ll go through in this article.

How to quote someone in Discord

You can quote someone in Discord using both Desktop and Mobile devices.

The methods for quoting someone are more or less the same on both platforms.

You can use the default format for quoting for single-line quotes and multi-line quotes.

Or, you can use the code block format to quote someone instead. We’ll go through all of these methods in this article.

Single-line Quotes

We’ll begin by explaining the method for formatting single-line quotes in Discord.

Single-line quotes refer to quotes that only take up one line of text. This means that these quotes don’t include any line breaks or paragraphs.

First of all, open up the Discord application and go to the input message box. In the box, type out your single-line quote. For example:

This is a single-line quote.

Once you’ve typed out your quote, go to the start of the text and type a greater-than sign. A greater-than sign looks like this >

After typing the greater-than sign, type out a single space. The end result should look something like this: > This is a single-line quote.

The message should now be formatted into a quote.

Once you’re finished formatting the quote, press the Enter-key to send the message. There should be a line to the left of the message that signifies it as a quote.

You can also use this formatting method for multi-line quotes. A multi-line quote is a quote that takes up more than one line of text.

Before attempting this, keep in mind that you can only use this method for quotes that have single line breaks between text.

If you have more than one line break between text, the format will break itself off.

In the input message box, type a greater-than sign. The greater-than sign looks like this >

Then, type out a single space and start typing your quote. You can include as many single line breaks or paragraphs as you need.

When you’re finished, press the Enter-key to send the message.

Multi-line Quotes

We’ll now discuss how you can format multi-line quotes in Discord. Multi-line quotes refer to quotes that take up more than one line of text.

This includes any line breaks or paragraphs. It also works for single-line quotes if need be.

This method is a little longer than the first one, so it’s more convenient to use the single-line formatting method if you can.

Launch the Discord application and go to the input message box. Within the box, start typing out your multi-line quote.

This can include as many line breaks or paragraphs as necessary.

When you’re finished, go to the start of the text and type out three greater-than signs. A greater-than sign looks like this >

After typing three greater-than signs, type out a single space. The message should look something like this: >>> This is a quote example.

When you’re done formatting the message, hit the Enter-key to send it.

Alternatively, you can use this formatting method in a different manner. This method only works for quotes that have single line breaks.

Open the Discord app, and go to the input message box. In the box, type three greater-than signs. A greater-than sign looks like this >

Once you’ve typed three greater-than signs, type out a single space. Then, start typing out your quote.

The message should look something like this: >>> This is a quote example.

When you’re finished formatting the message, press the Enter-key to send it off.

Code Blocks

If you don’t wish to use the default formatting for Discord quotes, you can use code blocks instead.

Code blocks will change the font of a message, and surround the message in a box.

This formatting method works for both single-line quotes and multi-line quotes.

To format a message into a code block, go to the input message box in Discord and type out three backticks. A backtick looks like this `

After typing out three backticks, type out your quote. Then, type out another three backticks.

Make sure that there are no spaces between the backtick and the text.

When you’re finished formatting the text, hit the Enter-key to send the message as a code block.

Discord Bots

You can also use a Discord bot to help you quote others in Discord more easily.

There are several quote bots available for use. Before attempting this method, make sure that you have admin rights to the server you wish to add the bot to.

You can only add bots to a server if you have admin privileges in the server. Some examples of Discord quote bots are Quotes Bot and Quotinator Bot.

Discord Quotes not working

If you’re trying to quote messages in Discord but it’s not working, this can be down to a few things.

Typically, it’s just that you need to leave a space after the > symbol to quote messages.

If you’re using this symbol and it’s still not working, then you’re going to want to restart your Discord app to try and get your quotation marks working again.

You can also try switching Discord server before switching back again.

Conclusion

In conclusion, you can quote someone on Discord using different formatting methods.

These formatting methods work on both single-line quotes and multi-line quotes.

You can use the default quote format, or the code block format if you so prefer.
