Discord channels are usually public to every member of the server. By default, both text channels and voice channels are made accessible to all members.
However, there are times where channels are made more private for various reasons.
Discord channels can be locked and made to be read-only to preserve important messages.
Discord channels can also be made completely private, which means only certain members will have access to the channel.
You can make private channels only accessible to certain members or certain roles.
Members who aren’t given access to the private channel will be unable to see the channel at all.
It will be hidden from view, and won’t even show up on the channels list.
How to make a Discord channel private
Private channels are useful for more confidential or personal conversations.
Private channels are often used by server admins for managerial discussions.
Keep in mind that you can only make a Discord channel private if you have access to admin permissions in the server.
Without this, you cannot making an existing channel private.
You can make a Discord channel private on both Desktop and Mobile platforms.
We’ll first discuss how you can make a Discord channel private on Desktop.
For Desktop
Launch the Discord client, and select the relevant server. Your list of servers should be available on the far left. to enter a server, simply click on a server icon.
Once you’ve selected the correct server, look at the list of channels on the left side tab.
Find the channel you want to make private, and click on it. Then, right-click on it and select ‘edit channel’. Go on the ‘permissions’ tab.
Next, click on the ‘advanced permissions’ option to expand the section. A list of permissions should appear.
You should also make sure that the @everyone option has been selected.
The option should be located beneath the ‘advanced permissions’ option.
If you’re making a text channel private, find the ‘view channel’ permission. It should be near the top of the permissions list.

If you’re in the voice channel settings, enable ‘view channel’, ‘connect’ and ‘speak’. When you’re finished, save the changes.
For Mobile
Open the Discord app, and press the three lines in the upper right. This should cause the left side tab to appear.
In the side tab, there should be a list of server icons. Find the relevant server icon, and press on it to enter the server.
Next, find the channel you wish to make private and long-press on it. A set of options should appear.
Select the ‘edit channel’ option. You should now be in the channel settings.
Select the ‘permissions’ option, and press ‘add a role’. Then, select the @everyone option. You should now see a list of permissions.
If you’re on a text channel, disable the ‘view channel’ permission to make the channel private.
If you’re on a voice channel, disable the ‘view channel’ permission and the ‘connect’ permission to make the channel private.
Now, you must add members to the private channel and allow them access to it.
Go back to the channel settings, and select ‘permissions’. Then, press ‘add a member’ or ‘add a role’.
Select the members or roles you wish to add to the channel, and edit their permissions.
If you’re on a text channel, enable ‘view channel’ and ‘send messages’. If you’re on a voice channel, enable ‘view channel’, ‘connect’ and ‘speak’.
They should now have access to the channel.
