How to go to the beginning of a Discord chat – Quick Function

Discord automatically saves all your messages, so you can go down memory lane and view old messages at any time.

This includes any media or other attachments that come with the messages. A message refers to anything that is sent in Discord.

If you’re trying to find a certain message, or you simply wish to see the first message in a Discord chat, you can go to the beginning of a chat.

There are no limitations for viewing old messages, and you can choose to see the start of a chat at any time.

If you wish to go all the way to the beginning of a Discord chat, there are ways to achieve this. We’ll discuss some of these methods in this article.

How to go to the beginning of a Discord chat

There is no in-built function for going straight to the beginning of a chat on Discord.

Therefore, the simplest method for going to the start of a Discord chat is just to manually scroll there.

As you scroll up in a Discord chat, old messages will load. Keep scrolling up until you reach the start of the chat.

There is no limit to scrolling on Discord, so you can scroll as much as you need to.

This is the simplest way to reach the beginning of a chat, but it is also the most tedious.

If there are a large amount of messages in the chat, it can take quite a while to scroll to the top.

Fortunately, there are easier ways to get to the beginning of a Discord chat. These methods mainly utilise Discord’s search function.

Discord allows you to search through messages using a set of filters. These filters include:

from: user (search messages by user)
mentions: user (search messages by @mentions)
has: link, embed or file (search messages by link or attachment)
before: specific date (search messages before a certain date)
during: specific date (search messages on a certain date)
after: specific date (search messages after a certain date)
in: channel (search messages by channel)

You can use these search filters to get as near to the top of the chat as possible, and manually scroll up from there.

If you’re uncertain about which filter will get you the oldest message in chat, test out each one. Then, choose the filter that get’s you the earliest message.

You can also try to use your knowledge of the chat to help you choose a filter.

For example, if you remember who sent the first message, you can use the from: user filter to find it.

Or, if you remember the specific date the first message was sent on, you can use the during: specific date filter to find it.

You can use Discord’s search function on Desktop and Mobile devices.

We’ll discuss how you can go to the beginning of a Discord chat on both platforms.

Since you can use any search filter to get to the start, we’ll simplify things by focusing on the in: channel filter in the following explanation.

This is the best filter for finding the start of a chat, as it can help you find the oldest message in a channel. This is only applicable to the Desktop version of Discord.

On Desktop

Launch the Discord app, and click on a server icon to enter the server. Your list of server icons should be available in the left side tab.

Then, click on the channel you wish to find the start of. In the top right of the screen, there should be a search bar. Click on the search bar.

search-filters

A list of search filters should appear. Click on the in: channel option to apply it to your search.

Now, type out a channel name in the search bar. Choose the channel you wish to find the start of.

Once you’ve typed out the channel name, an option should appear below the search bar.

Click on the option to start searching for messages in the chosen channel.

Once you’ve commenced your search, a tab should appear on the right side of the screen. The tab should showcase a list of messages from the chosen channel.

You can also choose to search for a message’s contents by typing some more in the search bar. Apply the search by pressing the Enter-key.

search-categories

You can view the messages in three different ordering systems. If you select the ‘new’ option, you can view the messages by newest to oldest.

If you select the ‘old’ option, you can view the messages by oldest to newest.

If you select the ‘relevant’ option, you can view the messages by most relevant to least relevant.

If you want to find the start of the chat, select the ‘old’ option to immediately find the earliest message result.

This is an easy way to skip past history and go to the very oldest messages in the chat.

Click on the earliest message to be taken to its placement in the chat. You should now be at the start of the chat.

On Mobile

Open the Discord app, and select the three lines in the top left. This will open up the side tab. Press on the relevant server icon to enter the server.

Then, select the channel you wish to find the start of. Once you’ve entered the right channel, swipe left to close the side tab.

Next, press on the search icon in the top right. This should take you to the search function.

A list of search filters should be showcased there. There is unfortunately no way to sort the messages by oldest to newest.

Therefore, the in: channel filter is not the best filter to use for finding the earliest message.

Instead, you’re better off using one of the other filters available.

In this example, we’ll use the from: user filter. Select the from: user option to apply the filter to your search.

A list of usernames should then appear. Select a username, and press the search icon in the lower right to commence the search.

Try choosing a user who’s sent early messages in the chat. You should now be able to see a list of messages from the chosen user.

By default, the messages are sorted by newest to oldest. Scroll all the way to the bottom to find the earliest message, and press on it.

This should take you to the message’s placement in chat. From there, scroll up until you find the start of the chat.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there is no in-built tool for going to the beginning of a Discord chat.

Instead, you’ll have to manually scroll there, or use the search function to find the earliest message and jump there.

If your Discord search is broken, then your best bet is just manually scrolling back to the first message in the channel.

Finding old messages on Discord is relatively straightforward, even if your search box isn’t working.
